Dr. Jennifer Gillis
Vocal Music and Humanities

Hello! My name is Dr. Gillis, and I am so excited to be here at Harding Charter Prep HS! I will be teaching the vocal music ensembles, humanities and Senior capstone.

A Little Bit About Me...
I received my doctorate in Vocal Music as well as my Masters from The University of Oklahoma. BOOMER! I went to the University of Tulsa for my undergraduate degree in vocal performance, which is where I met my husband.  My husband is also a singer, and he currently teaches general music and choir as well at another school. I have a daughter named Sophia who will turn 2 years old this December.  I absolutely love being a mom, and I love being a teacher. Both avenues are extremely rewarding. On the weekends, I typically spend time with my family outdoors or cantor for masses/weddings/funerals. I previously taught music and choir at Rosary School, and I also taught jazz choir and voice and piano lessons at OCCC.  As for my favorite type of music, I like a little bit of everything! It depends on the day. However, I can always go for a little Fleetwood Mac or Lady Gaga.

Why Choose the Fine Arts
Choir, Art, Drama, and other art forms are great outlets for creativity and positivity in our world.  Choir members become part of a community/family that work together to create something special, whether through a live performance or recording.  Singing as a member of a choir or as a soloist helps to build one's confidence and listening skills. Students also learn the lifelong skill of reading music.

Vocal Scholarships
There are also many opportunities for scholarships in music at universities and colleges. Students need not major in music to be able to apply for these.  There are choir scholarships available for students who audition and sign up for choir as an elective in their degree program.

Important Dates:

Choir Concerts 2020-2021
Winter Concert: December 10th, 7-9pm
Spring Concert: April 29th, 7-9pm

All-State Choirs
Students interested in auditioning for honor choirs (OCDA for 9th and OMEA for 10th-12th) can purchase music and practice CDs from local music stores such as Penders or Edmond Music or online through OCDA or OMEA.  Auditions rounds 1 and 2 will be done virtually this year. Dr. Gillis will help those students record their auditions the day that the cuts are released in October and November.  Students interested need to apply by September 19th ($15). Dr. Gillis will help students who are interested with audition music after school in person, or via online if necessary.
